1 week biking review - with Times Square Video!
It's already one week since I got my bike. And it's aaaawesome to ride ;)
I will give you a few impressions about riding a bicycle in New York.
In theory, there are many bike lanes in New York! They are quite good marked one the street, however nnot recognized or respected by most people, especially pedestrians. However, from time to time, there are some specials: Mounted police ;)
To navigate through the streets of New York, I mainly look at the map before starting, loosing my way soon and then trying to get back on the road - no navigation stuff ;). Even though I got this awesome feature to my bike:
Despite modern navigation, but mainly because bikers are also not almighty, this happens:
On behalf of the difficulties, I have to say that riding NY is more exciting than Vienna ;). Biking lanes are most of the time on the left side of the street, so it is especially interesting when cars are turning left. Even though bikers have priority - cars do not always care so much ;)
Speaking about biker signs... this reminds me of the great french "SAUF" signs
For people not familiar with german, its not funny ;). Look, that's why:
The german word "Sauf" means "to drink a lot", however the french word "sauf" means "except"... so when you have this sign "sauf bicycles", it means "except bicyles" for french people and "drinking bicycles" for german-speakers ;).
I wanted to upload a video on this page, but somehow it's not really working. You can download it from dropbox
The route is coming up soon... enjoy watching the movie!
To sum up, the best thing of biking is to be above the ground,... because from time to time you get wonderful views:
